How I Spent My Summer Vacation (2012)

"Is this a prison, or the world shittiest mall?"

A criminal (Mel Gibson) was chased by a bunch of cops before he literally crashed into Mexico through the border fence... He was locked up in a Mexican prison town and used up every sly trick he had in order to survive...

Mel Gibson is back on screen and now he plays an unnamed career criminal who is very cunning... Yeah, the name of the main character is unknown but the inmates of where he's kept captive in called him Gringo (white man)... I have to tell you that Gibson's definitely a good actor and in this movie, he acts the character that suits him well - a macho, sarcastic and sharp man who is very determined to survive in a very hard place with his own means...

Besides Gibson's acting, what's amusing about this movie is its clever plot... The way the Gringo manipulated every top gun in the prison is very fun to watch...

There are also some action scenes that's quite engaging every now and then through out the movie... Towards the end, the Gringo found himself desperate for an escape and vengeance that he's forced to use more straightforward methods to get everything that he wanted and needed...

To summarize, this movie is very amusing to watch mostly because of Mel Gibson and the good plot...

Dredd (2012)

"I am the law"

Dredd (Karl Urban) was assigned to assess rookie judge Anderson (Olivia Thirlby) out in the field... They responded to a murder report at a 200 storey tower, Peach Trees... What is thought to be just a normal gang bust turned out to be a deadly mission as they were trapped in the tower and hunted down by most of the residents...

Movie fans would just can't resist comparing this version to Sly's... Despite the scepticisms thrown by classic lovers, I was pretty excited about this movie simply because my love of the comic book and I expected it to be action packed... What I anticipated the most was awesome motorcycle chases and advanced technology in weaponry... Not to mention, I also wanted to see high level of badassness from Judge Dredd...

Well, Dredd turned out to be quite engaging to watch... What I love the most about this movie is in its plot... Being trapped in a fortress with no back up and limited ammo, the duo had no choice but to strike the core of the menace at the top floor... Getting up was not easy as there were armed gang members on each floor looking for them...

The action scenes were superb... I couldn't help comparing it to The Raid: Redemption (Serbuan Maut) because the story line and place setting was almost identical... Though in Dredd there was less fighting and more gunshots...

I love the SLO MO effects especially the slow fall to the death...

[The below paragraph contains spoilers]

I got one complaint though... Judge Dredd in this movie is not Dredd enough... He lacks badassness... For instance, when the thugs rained him machine gun bullets, he was supposed to smoke 'em dead before they got a chance to do anything... NOT RUN... Hey, Dredd is supposed to be legendary... like Rambo... The part when he was shot was frustrating to watch because he did nothing... Instead, he let a rookie stole the kill... Olivia Thirlby as Anderson robbed the spotlight from Urban which is pretty ironic since the title is DREDD... It seems that they should just change the title to "Dredd and Anderson"...

Have I mentioned to u that Olivia was extremely cute in this movie?

The bad guy... I mean, bad girl deserves praises for her act of violence... Ma-Ma (Lena Headey) really fits the character of a ruthless criminal mind...

All in all, Dredd is a good movie... Action packed, a bit gory (bloody and... fleshy), and I love Judge Anderson... The minus point is that they need to work more on Dredd character... Give him more tough guy clichés like walking away from explosion and not giving a fuck to fancy machine guns...

Resident Evil: Retribution (2012)

"Congratulations... You're officially a badass..."

Alice (Milla Jovovich) had been kidnapped by the Red Queen after the rumble with Wesker (Shawn Roberts)... With the help of Ada Wong (Bingbing Li), she managed to escape her holding cell but then faced multiple level of attacks from the Red Queen...

I can say that Retribution, the fifth and latest instalment of the Resident Evil is my least favorite of all five... The production house seems to focus too much on the visual and sound effects that they fail to come up with a better story line... This particular sequal is indeed a true style over subtance kind of movie...

In order to really like this movie, one must be a true fan of the franchise... Luckily, I am a fan and therefore, yes, I like this movie... Not as much as the first three but I would still watch it again if given a chance...

The obvious plus point for Retribution is in its stunning visual effects... I really love the slow motion scenes especially during the opening where everything seems to be in rewind and then fast forward...

I don't really have to elaborate on how badass Alice is... I don't really favor Milla as an actor but when it comes to kicking ass and being sexy, she's the right girl to turn to... The best thing is, she's not the only one with tight spandex... Jill Valentine (Sienna Guillory) returns to the franchise with even more sexy apparel... I do enjoy watching her in short skirts but seeing her in tight purple just got me really excited... My eyes were focused only on her... One more thing, I was so surprised to see Michelle Rodriguez being so cute in heels and normal outfit... I guess I'm so used to seeing her playing boyish characters... All those three women that I mentioned are all badasses in this movie...

As expected, Retribution is a cosplay heaven... If normal zombies and monsters are not enough, they serve the audience with a zombie army... Like literally a zombie army all wearing military get up... Zombie make up, tight spandex, sexy cheong sam... Cosplayers must wet themselves watching this movie...

I feel that the Resident Evil producers need to come up with a better story to pair with the great visual effects  and exciting action... Story is king... All in all, as mentioned before, this fifth instalment is strictly for fans and totally the style over substance kind...

A Lame and Adult-ish Post

Last night, I watched an episode of a television show, "Dont Trust the B____ in Apartment 23", on my laptop... I've downloaded a few episodes of it and just last night I got the mood to watch at least one...

Well, I found that particular episode quite amusing, but I'm not planning on reviewing it here... I just want to express my concern about how most foreign television shows encourage casual sex so much... Yeahh, yeahh, I know... It's so lame and adult-ish of me to be thinking about something like this... but, as a future father, I have to admit that I'm genuinely worried...

Gosh...

After the episode ended, I lay my head on a pillow and stared at the ceiling thinking about other television shows I love like Dexter, Happy Endings, How I Met Your Mother, Revenge, The Big Bang Theory Show, Will and Grace and etc... Heck, all of them sort of convince people that casual sex is a cool thing to do...

Modern Family is the only show that's kinda safe to watch... though there is an episode where Phil had to convince himself that teenagers losing virginities is a common thing and had to painfully accept that fact...

AARRGHHH!! Sex before marriage is not okey!!

I thought about how did my parents raised me to be who I am today - a nice, well mannered, loving, responsible, obedient guy... Well, I know I'm not perfect, but I don't do drugs, I don't smoke, I don't party around, I respect my parents, I shower my wife with love and affection, I don't spend on worthless things...

Among my four siblings, I was the only who received proper beatings from my parents... The eldest was raised and pampered by my grandmother... My younger brothers were (are still) spoilt by my parents... I was the only one who got whooped with rods and got locked outside for reasons I can't seem to remember now...

Sometimes I do wonder why my parents was quite bias... There's a small room in heart that is occupied with anger and jealousy... but I keep that room locked... I'm the bigger person... at least that's what I keep telling myself...

Anyway, yeah, my parents did beat me but I'm not sure it made me who I am today...

One thing I'm sure of is that I was unexposed... When I was a kid, there was no Internet and we couldn't afford Astro... We only had TV1, TV2 and TV3 to watch but I guess it was enough for me... Power Rangers, Jetman, Sesame Street, He-Man, Donald Duck, Mickey Mouse, Mighty Mouse were among the shows I loved to watch and they sure don't promote bad stuff...

Plus, my personality hindered me from making friends with ill mannered kids... I was pretty much an introvert and the ones who were nice enough to be friends with an introvert were of course nice people...

In this modern era, I doubt that I can constrain my kid from exposing him/herself to the wild world outside... and I certainly can't forge him/her to be me... Haih...

I came to a conclusion that the best way to educate my kid is by always being there by his/her side... Immediately explaining what's wrong and what's not to follow from the television shows even though the characters are making the thing looks cool to do... Having the conversation about the birds and the bees... Correcting every mistakes he/she makes...

I guess that defines a good father - someone who will always be there... not just to protect but also to lead and advice... to teach... to support...

Damn... I haven't even met my kid but I already know that I love him/her and I want to do my best to be a good father... A great father...

I'll do my best, kid...

Aurora

Auroras... They sure are beautiful aren't they? I would definitely want to see them for myself if I ever have the chance...

However, many don't realize that they're actually created by intense solar activity... Meaning, the sun shoots so much radiation that it collides with earth's atmosphere, creating prisms of light...

Intense solar activity is not something that can be taken lightly... In 1859, a massive solar flare formed on the surface of the sun had created the most catastrophic geomagnetic storm to hit earth... Auroras were seen through out the world...

The geomagnetic storm had caused electric transformers to explode causing blackout all over the world... Luckily, at that time, men didn't rely to much on technology and thus, the effects were not really damaging...

If the same thing would happen to us today, the result would be extremely bad... We now live in a world dependent on technology... That level of geomagnetic storm can destroy most of earth's transformers... It would take decades for us to repair the damage...

I repeat, it would take DECADES for us to repair the damage... Can u imagine living in a world without electricity? No Internet, no television, no lights, no laptops, no game consoles...

We will be cavemen...

Furthermore, if the level of the storm exceeds the one in 1859, earth's surface might burn... Put that in your How-the-world-would-end list...

Therefore, the next time u see pictures of auroras or the actual thing, be reminded that they are sort of an indication of how powerful our sun is...
