The Dark Knight Rises (2012)

"When Gotham is ashes, you have my permission to die..."

Batman (Christian Bale) took the blame for Harvey Dent's death and disappeared as Gotham triumphed in peace... However, he was forced to go back in action when Bane (Tom Hardy) rose from darkness and spread flames on the city with his loyal army...

Finally, the long awaited conclusion of a legendary series is now showing worldwide... I have to say that The Dark Knight Rises is indeed the most talked about movie of this year so far... I saw so many reviews (good and bad) and discussions from professional and non professional critics even before the movie was released... The previous installment, The Dark Knight, had put such high standards (all thanks to the Heath Ledger's performance as The Joker) that fans were anticipating this movie to be more epic and mind fucking...

So, what do I think of The Dark Knight Rises? (Those who haven't watch it, beware, there are spoilers)

Well, it's hard to not to compare it with its predecessor... To tell you the truth, I personally think that The Dark Knight is a better movie because of the wicked act of Joker... However, I'm not telling you that The Dark Knight Rises is a bad movie... In fact, it's far from bad... It's great!

For me, the most memorable scene was the brawl between Batman and Bane in the sewers... There was no background music played and the only sound heard were grunts and blows from the epic clash between two creatures of the dark... The silence triggered a lot bone chilling emotions...

The action scenes were really satisfying... From hand to hand combat between the main masked ones to the collisions of cool mechas... This movie really had a lot going on...

Christopher Nolan picked so many talented cast members and I noticed that most of them are from Inception... My favourite is of course Joseph Gordon Levitt who I played Officer Blake - the persistent hot headed rookie... Christian Bale did extremely well as the lead... Because this movie is more about how Bruce Wayne falling and rising again as the hero that Gotham needed, we got to see him more without his mask on... That means, Bale must portrayed all emotions and indeed he did... Gary Oldman also did a really god job as Commissioner Gordon (as expected)...

Though, this movie had some flaws too... The obvious flaw is the absence of "Joker"... Heath Ledger made the Joker so psychotic and powerful in the previous one that I expected Bane to be more insane and brain numbing... Like I said, its hard to not compare these two movies...

Besides that, to top The Dark Knight, Nolan seemed to overdo certain aspects that this movie appeared to be a bit bloated or pretentious...

Luckily, the flaws were not too major and I was able to enjoy the movie to the fullest...

I was most excited when the ending came... I told myself, "Damn... the ending is the beginning of something new..."... Like what my friend Adi and my brother in law, Bayep said, there might be a spin off featuring Robin or Nightwing...

Detective Blake mentioned about "a giant alligator in the sewers"... My heart screamed Killer Croc!! Possible hint for the spin off?? We shall wait and see...

The verdict is, I think that The Dark Knight Rises is awesome and epic... I enjoyed the twist and turn in story line, I loved the action scenes, the cast was epic, the ending got me psyched... I love it... I love it...

The Amazing Spider-Man (2012)

"We all have secrets... The ones we keep and the ones that are kept from us..."

Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) was investigating clues that might unveil the mystery of his parents' disappearance... Bitten by a radioactive spider, Parker's genes mutated and that granted him super powers... Though, he was not the only person who have the key to a biologically enhanced human being...

At first, I was rather skeptical on this movie because I simply love Tobey Maguire as Spiderman... I just didn't think that Andrew Garfield would be up for the task of replacing him...

Fortunately, Andrew was not just up for the task, he nailed it so hard that now I personally think that he's a better Spiderman than Tobey was...

Tobey brought out the nerd in Spiderman but Andrew managed to deliver the nerd, the drama, the rage and the cuteness of Peter Parker... It's those little things that he did that made me think that he's a damn good actor... He's a natural... The way he reacted to everything, the way he smiled, the anger that he portrayed... Ah, I'm turning gay over him...

Basically, this movie is not a Spiderman movie... Instead, it's Peter Parker's... That's why we didn't see Mary Jane as the love interest... Instead, Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone) took the stage as the masked vigilante's crush...

Mary Jane fell in love with Spiderman but Gwen had the hots for Peter...

Ah, the chemistry between Andrew and Emma was very pleasant to watch... Like I said before, Andrew's performance was superb... Emma Stone matched his pace with her usual cute quirky act... Owh, I loved it when they were on screen together because they successfully portray the sweetness of high school love...

Again, I repeat, this is no Spidey movie... This is Peter Parker's... The heart of the movie was Parker trying to make sense of everything... How he tried to solve the mystery of his parents, how he learned how to control his powers, how he desperately seek vengeance and how he came to a conclusion of the purpose of his vigilant actions... This is the factor of why I love this movie so much...

All the attention given on Peter Parker of course caused Spidey to lose his spotlight... Though the action part was quite impressive mostly because of the visual effects, the fact that Spidey unmasked himself for so many times made me think that hey, it's not Spiderman fighting the Lizard... It's Peter Parker...

Here comes the verdict... Do I like the movie? Yes, yes, yes, I love this movie...

Do I think that it's better than Raimi and Tobey's version?? Yes, I would prefer this over the previous ones...

I love this version of Spiderman so much because it shows the human side of Spidey... The one who's underneath the mask... A brave, kind and a bit immature teenage boy... Owh, and of course, because Andrew and Emma were so cute together... Made my heart melt...

Brave (2012)

"If you had a chance to change your fate, would you?"

Merida (Kelly MacDonald) was a princess with a boyish personality and rebellious attitude... Her mother, Queen Elinor (Emma Thompson), spent most of her time shaping Merida into a perfect queen... However, Merida refused to bow to the queen's plans for her and chose to create her own destiny...

You really cannot deny the fact that PIXAR is one of the best animation creators in the movie industry... That's why it's kinda hard for me to resist watching its latest production, Brave... Others who watched it before me insisted that this movie is a worthy watch as they stated that it's really heart warming and fun... Furthermore, it has been receiving superb reviews from both professional and amateur critics...

The first thing that I noticed about this movie is how beautiful the animation was... I was amazed by how wonderful Merida's extremely wavy hair looked... The landscape design was also flawless... The amazing view of the forest and tall mountains were so refreshing to the eyes...

Apart from that, I personally think that this movie was quite predictable in terms of story... Compared to other PIXAR's creations such as Up and Wall-E, there's so little aspects in Brave that could be labelled as groundbreaking most probably because the producers tried hard to maintain it as a fairy tale like story...

However, I'm not indicating that it's not an entertaining movie... Despite the mediocre story line, I did enjoy most of the scenes especially the part when Merida taught her 'mother' how to catch salmons or sockeyes upstream... That part was adorable...

The male characters contributed most of the humor... Merida's father and three kings were amusing to watch because they're so silly... I wished that the competition between three princes would lasted longer because the guys were so colourful in personality... If there's a sequel coming, I demanded those three to be in it as main roles...

Heartwarming and fun but a little predictable in terms of story... A great movie for its target audience - kids... Beautiful animation, an eye candy definitely... Yes, that kinda sums it all :-P
